Advancing open standards for the Circular Economy

The OPEN PRODUCT INITIATIVE (OPI) brings together developers, industry experts and end-users with a mission to develop and promote open standards for the seamless exchange of product-related data, facilitating a truly sustainable Circular Economy. At the heart of OPI is the ambition to create a new, open standard for product-related data — the Open-Product™ Data Model.

The Open-Product™ Data Model is derived from Loughborough University research. This innovative model will initially focus on data profiles for electronics and electrical equipment, including batteries, setting the stage for a future where interoperable Digital Product Passports and Battery Passports pave the way for more sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Get involved – Activities for 2024

The success of the Open Product Initiative relies on the collaboration and contributions of a wide range of stakeholders. Whether you’re involved in manufacturing, data management, sustainability, or simply have a keen interest in supporting the Circular Economy, your participation is valuable.

This Spring and early Summer, we will be conducting a series of workshops focusing on the specific challenges and opportunities within the electronics and battery sectors. These workshops are crucial for gathering input, sharing expertise, and jointly developing the data standards necessary for a more sustainable future. Stakeholders from across the supply chain, including manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, and policymakers, are invited to contribute their insights and experiences.

In 2024 we will be …

  • Mapping stakeholders, systems, data and standards landscape
  • Designing through engagement with end-users in a series of online and in-person workshops
  • Open-Product™ Data Model development focusing on data profiles for Electronic and Electrical Equipment, and batteries
  • Demonstrating concepts of operation through use case examples
  • Developing feasibility cases and future opportunities
